In her absence, the Auckland Reading Association executive has voted unanimously to nominate Shirley Nalder for an NZRA Citation of Merit.

Shirley has given exemplary service. She is a quiet achiever who does not seek personal glory, but collaboratively promotes successful completion of tasks. Her knowledge of reading matters ranks among the best in New Zealand.

Shirley has a long and productive involvement with the Auckland Reading Association and her participation in matters relating to the wider issues of reading development has a high correlation with the purposes of NZRA. Her activities with children, teachers, colleagues, Inservice training, development of guidelines and materials and the promotion of the Resource Teachers of Reading Association as a voluntary professional organisation far exceed the tasks for which she received a salary. Her influence with experienced and inexperienced teachers has encouraged reflection, enhanced skill and instilled confidence.
